Pre-sawn alabaster block for oloid to carve out the geometric body of the oloid. Less material removal required, orientation during moulding.
Available in transparent, pink and caramel colours.
The oloid is a fascinating geometric body: it was discovered in 1929 by the sculptor and mechanical engineer Paul Schatz. The oloid is the only geometric body that can unroll over its entire surface. The base is formed by two circles of equal size. To illustrate this, you can take two round beer mats of the same size: If you cut one beer mat along its radius to the centre and then stick it vertically onto the radius of the second beer mat so that right angles are formed between the surfaces, you can approximate the shape. The oloid forms a kind of envelope around the two circles. For Paul Schatz, the shape resulted from the inversion of a cube. Due to its special properties, the oloid is used, for example, as part of an oloid stirrer in circulation technology.
Carving a perfect oloid out of a stone is an exciting and challenging task for every sculptor!
Stone is a natural product. We endeavour to reproduce the appearance of our sculpture stones as accurately as possible in the illustrations so that the character of the stone can be recognised. Ultimately, each stone is unique and the appearance may differ from the illustration.
