Arkansas sharpening and honing stones are oil stones. At bildhau you will only find Arkansas natural sharpening stones. Before using the sharpening or honing stone, lightly wet the stone with honing oil.
To maintain your sharpening or honing stones after use, rub the oil residue off the sharpening stone with a cloth to remove any metal residue. Then moisten the sharpening stone with some fresh oil before packing it away.
The naturally extracted Arkansas grindstones are made of novaculite, a very dense, hard and fine-grained metamorphic rock made of silicon. It occurs in various colours from white to black-grey. The rock is mined in Arkansas in the USA, but also in Oklahoma.
Due to their fineness, Arkansas honing stones are very suitable as honing stones after the wooden tools have been processed with coarser sharpening stones (e.g. CORAP, diamond sharpening stone). It is also possible to sharpen wooden tools completely with an Arkansas grindstone - the result is a particularly fine grind, but the sharpening procedure takes some time.
You can find more information about sharpening and honing wooden tools by hand in our specialist knowledge articles Sharpening tools by hand: Sharpening stones, sharpening gouges by hand and Coticule - belgian coticule whetstone polygon.
