PROCESSING
Rosa Aurora marble can be worked very well by hand using forged point chisels with hammerhead in combination with a claw chisel with hammerhead. If the marble contains quartz components (grey shading), it can be significantly harder and the use of carbide chisels is recommended. Marble can also be polished by hand to a high lustre. In Italian sculpture workshops, marble is mainly worked with compressed air tools, which can be used to shape it very precisely. Polishing can also be done by machine.
Sculptures made of pink Aurora marble are suitable for indoor installation. For outdoor installation, the stone may need to be treated with an impregnation.
FURTHER INFORMATION
Pink Portogallo is a very old stone, around 450 million years old. The pink colour is the result of iron oxide deposits in the form of microscopically small hematite flakes between the calcite crystals of the original limestone, which became marble through metamorphosis over millions of years under the influence of pressure and heat. Depending on the concentration and distribution of the haematite in the stone, red veins and clouds are formed. (Dark) grey veins consist of graphite, greenish veins of serpentine.
Stone is a natural product. We endeavour to reproduce the appearance of our sculptured stones as accurately as possible in the illustrations so that the character of the stone can be recognised. Ultimately, each stone is unique and the appearance may differ from the illustration.
