Letter carving for type designers - a handbook by Françoise Berserik.

"Lettercarving for type designers" is a practice-oriented handbook written for the students of the one-year master's programme "Type and Media" at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague in the field of type design. It describes the "Lettercarving" course, which consists of a series of three exercises and many related practical aspects, such as selecting and preparing the stone, learning how to use tools, and sketching and making a drawing for a typeface suitable for striking.

With its practical instructions, the book is not only of interest to students, but basically to type designers and anyone who is enthusiastic about type design, developing their own typography and carving typefaces in stone!

Normally it is stone sculptors and stonemasons who carve letters in stone. For many years, however, book designer Françoise Berserik has been teaching a course in carving typefaces in stone as part of the "Type and Media" degree programme. The subject is taken very seriously at the academy, where the course is an integral part of the programme. Françoise Berserik has been working in the craft for a long time alongside her teaching activities and her profession as a book designer, producing signs, memorial plaques and gravestones on commission. She began making letters as a graphic design student in Arnhem.

The handbook contains contributions from students and colleagues as well as numerous illustrations. With contributions by Pip Hall, Peter Verheul, Erik van Blokland, Lars van Blokland, Omaima Dajani, Léna Le Pommelet and the students of Type and Media; illustrations by Teun Berserik; photography by Marjo Starink, Marja van der Burgh; The Hague: Erven Berserik Uitgeverij, 2024.
