Design ceramic surfaces with BOTZ liquid glazes

Glazes can be used to design the surfaces of ceramics - earthenware, stoneware, stoneware and porcelain. After bisque firing, the glaze is applied to the ceramic and, once the glaze has dried, it is fused onto the ceramic in a second firing, the glaze or glaze firing. This creates a dense matt or glossy surface. Effect glazes or glaze layers and combinations open up many design options.

The colourful range of glazes from BOTZ includes transparent glazes, semi-transparent glazes, opaque glazes, effect glazes and crackle glazes. BOTZ liquid glazes are ready to use. All glazes do not require labelling, as they contain neither lead nor harmful substances requiring labelling. The liquid glazes do not create dust and are therefore not harmful to the respiratory tract.

The stoneware glazes are ideal for designing tableware. Some of the spreadable liquid glazes in the firing range of 1020° - 1060° C can also be used to create tableware and drinkware. The stoneware glazes are resistant to both chemical and mechanical attack. The glazes are labelled accordingly. The labelling means that the glazes have passed the tests for acid and alkali stability. They can therefore also be used safely on the inside of tableware and other objects that come into contact with food.

Special glaze brushes are recommended for applying the BOTZ liquid glazes to the ceramic. The brushes should of course be hair-free, but should also leave as few or no application marks as possible in the glaze (particularly important for transparent glazes) - this works best with very fine and soft brushes. If BOTZ liquid glazes are to be used for other types of application, such as moulding or dipping, they can be slightly diluted with water.

The firing temperature makes the difference

BOTZ liquid glazes are designed for different firing ranges, as the firing temperature of the glaze and ceramic must be matched to each other: At what temperature (earthenware, stoneware, porcelain) can the clay used be fired? It is also important what colour the clay has after firing and at what temperature, because the colour of the clay has a very strong influence on the appearance of semi-transparent glazes, for example. Information on this can usually be found on the packaging of the clay or porcelain body. Choose a glaze with a corresponding firing range:

1020° - 1060° C is the firing range of the spreadable BOTZ liquid glazes for earthenware and stoneware, which can be used very well in the fields of art, school and hobby. There is a particularly large selection of colours and effects. Please note: Some glazes can only be fired at a maximum temperature of 1040° C, others even up to 1100° C. The glazes are labelled accordingly.

1220° - 1280° C is the firing range for the liquid stoneware glazes from BOTZ. They are ideal for tableware and drinkware.

1020° - 1280° C is the very wide firing range of the BOTZ PRO glazes. They are suitable for both earthenware and stoneware. These glazes offer several design options, depending on the firing temperature: At 1050° C, this glaze becomes almost opaque and beautifully coloured on earthenware. At 1150° C, for example, a semi-transparent glaze with equally strong colours is created on early sintering earthenware clay. At 1250° C in stoneware firing, a beautiful glassy, semi-transparent surface in intense pastel colours is created - this glaze is also suitable for porcelain, for example.

The Additive BOTZ PLUS 9020 can be fired at 1050° - 1280° C: The additive can be used to enhance the effects of earthenware glazes by applying BOTZ PLUS to the unfired earthenware glaze and then firing at around 1250° C. With a thick, pure application and a firing temperature of approx. 1250° C, beautiful crystal effects are created. If BOTZ PLUS is applied pure to stoneware clay and fired at approx. 1050° C, a crackle glaze with a silky surface is created.

In principle, we recommend making one or more samples first. This is the best way to see what colour you get at what temperature and on what surface, how thick or thin you need to apply the glaze to get the best result for you before you create your actual clay object with a glaze.
