Ball moulding iron with straight blade. Grinding angle 25°. Sculptor's chisel with hornbeam handle, octagonal shape. Total length 280 mm.
Primarily for carving curves.
Flat and gouges are versatile carving tools: when carving wood, gouges are used for everything from removing a lot of material for the first rough shape to the fine finishing of details. Flat and gouges can be used to carve out convexes and concaves and to shape surfaces; wood can be shaped freely.
KIRSCHEN gouges are available with different stitches and in many different blade widths. The gouge indicates the depth of the curvature of the carving iron and is designated by numbers from very flat irons with gouge edge 2 to strongly curved irons with gouge edge 12. At KIRSCHEN, a carving iron with gouge edge 1 is called a flat iron or gouge edge, carving irons with gouge edge 2 1/2, 3 and 4 are called flat irons, carving chisels with gouge edge 5, 6, 7 and 8 are called gouge edges, while gouge edges 9, 10 and 11 are also called drills. Flat and gouges are available in straight, curved, offset and reverse offset shapes.
KIRSCHEN carving chisels are supplied sharpened and ready for use. KIRSCHEN carving chisels are made from a high-carbon tool steel with a hardness of 61 HRc and hardened in a salt bath over the entire useful length (2/3 of the blade). The steel is subject to natural corrosion. To prevent corrosion, the chisels should be cleaned with a lightly oiled cloth (e.g. with BALLISTOL universal oil) after use or if they are stored for a longer period of time, so that a light, protective oil film forms.
