Gouges and v-parting tools are versatile carving tools: they can be used for carving wood, from removing a lot of material for the first rough shape to the fine finishing of details. You can use gouges to shape wood freely, carve out convexes and concaves and shape surfaces. V-parting tools have a V-shaped cutting edge and are particularly suitable for fine details and edges on figures and reliefs.
KIRSCHEN v-parting tools have a V-shaped cutting edge and are available in stitches 39 to 45, each of which characterises certain angles. KIRSCHEN gouges are available with different stitches and in many different blade widths. The gouge indicates the depth of the curvature of the carving iron and is labelled with numbers - from 2, very flat irons, to 11, strongly curved irons. At KIRSCHEN, a carving iron with an engraving 1 is called a flat iron or ball iron. Carving irons with a gouge edge 2 1/2 to gouge edge 4 are called flat irons and carving irons with a gouge edge 5 to gouge edge 11. Flat and gouges are available in straight, curved, offset and inverted offset shapes.
KIRSCHEN carving chisels are supplied sharpened and ready for use. KIRSCHEN carving chisels are made from a high-carbon tool steel with a hardness of 61 HRc and hardened in a salt bath over the entire useful length (2/3 of the blade). The steel is subject to natural corrosion. To prevent corrosion, the chisels should be cleaned with a lightly oiled cloth (e.g. with BALLISTOL universal oil) after use or if they are stored for a longer period of time, so that a light, protective oil film forms.
