Marble – the classic sculpture material for a sculpture

Marble was already used as a sculpting material in Greek and Roman antiquity. Probably one of the most famous marble sculptures in the history of art was created at the beginning of the 16th century: Michelangelo's David – even without a base, more than five metres high and hewn from a single block. Even the Renaissance artist sourced his marble stone from Carrara in the Apuan Alps, where the famous Carrara marble is still quarried today in various marble quarries. However, marble is not only quarried in Italy, of course, but in many regions around the world.
