Modelling - a traditional sculptural discipline

In contrast to stone sculpture and wood sculpture, which work with subtractive methods, i.e. by removing material, modelling is an additive process – a form is built up, material is added and can also be removed and added again during the working process. Not only sculptures are modelled, but also models and objects. Classic modelling materials are Clay, Wax or Plastilin.

Modelling with clay, plasticine, wax

Modelling clays can vary in strength. They can be worked by hand and retain their shape. Some materials harden after working, clay, for example, can be air-dried, but also fired. Wax becomes pliable and mouldable through body temperature when worked by hand. If it is too firm, you can also heat it for better modelling. If it cools down, it becomes hard again. Plastilin, on the other hand, retains its soft consistency and can be shaped again and again. All modelling pastes can be worked with modellierwerkzeuge as well as by hand. Particularly practical as a workstation are modelling blocks and knurling discs. For larger shapes, we recommend reinforcing with reinforcing rods or wire.
