Modelling iron & spatula for clay, plaster, wax & plasticine
Modelling irons and modelling putties are used to apply, remove, shape and smooth material or to give surfaces a special design. They are also known as application fillers or moulding fillers. Modelling spatulas are available in many different sizes and all conceivable shapes. Putty knives with a narrow, serrated cutting edge are also known as forged modelling tools – a forged modelling tool is ideal for working with plaster, for example. Stainless steel modelling spatulas have the advantage that they do not rust. However, they are more rigid and less flexible. Forged steel modelling spatulas, such as those hand-forged by Milani at bildhau, have beautifully springy blades that are ideal for working on curved surfaces. But here too, the important thing is what you want to do or achieve, and the choice of material depends on this. If you are working with wax, for example, metal tools have the advantage that you can also heat them up to make your work easier or to create certain designs.
