Modelling irons & spatulas for clay, plaster, wax & plasticine
.Modelling irons and modelling putty are used to apply, remove, shape and smooth material or to give surfaces a special design. They can also be referred to as application putties or moulding putties. Modelling putties are available in many different sizes and all conceivable shapes. Spatulas with a narrow, toothed cutting edge are also called scrapers – a scraper is excellent for working in plaster, for example. Stainless steel modelling putties have the advantage that they do not rust. However, they are more rigid and less flexible. Spatulas made of forged steel, e.g. hand-forged by Milani at bildhau, have very nicely springy blades with which curved surfaces can be worked very well. But again, the important thing is what you want to do or achieve, so the choice of material depends on that. If you are working with wax, for example, metal tools have the advantage that you can also heat them up to make your work easier or to make certain designs.
