The flat iron with a slightly slanted cutting edge is also called a ball iron and is often used without a mallet. It enables a slightly pulling cut with very good chip formation. Ground on both sides, the iron can be used to cut to the left or right. The flat carving iron can also be used to carve out lettering and ornaments.
Flat carving irons and gouges are versatile carving tools: they can be used for carving wood, from removing a lot of material for the first rough shape to the fine finishing of details. You can use gouges to shape wood freely, carve out convexes and concaves and shape surfaces.
Gouges are available in straight, curved, offset and inverted offset shapes. PFEIL gouges are available in many cutting edge widths and with different stitches. The gouge edge indicates the depth of the curvature of the gouge and is labelled with numbers from 2, very flat gouges, to 11, strongly curved gouges. Stitch 1 is referred to as a flat iron.
