The blades are ground on one side. Blade length 110 - 135 mm. Overall length 245 - 270 mm.
There is no difference in the type of application between flat irons ground on one side and two sides with a straight edge. The decisive factor is what suits you better and is more comfortable for carving.
A flat iron with a straight edge is used to carve the first rough shape out of the wood. It can also be used to recut large areas.
Flat carving irons and gouges are versatile carving tools: they are used for carving wood, from removing a lot of material for the first rough shape to the fine finishing of details. You can use gouges to shape wood in a free form, carve out convexes and concaves and shape surfaces.
Gouges are available in straight, curved, curved and reverse curved shapes. PFEIL gouges are available in many cutting edge widths and with different stitches. The gouge edge indicates the depth of the curvature of the gouge and is labelled with numbers from 2, very flat gouges, to 11, strongly curved gouges. Stitch 1 is referred to as a flat iron.
