Why are air tools among the classic stone sculpting tools?

Every professional marble sculptor in Italy works with pneumatic tools – and for several reasons: A marble sculptor stands at the stone for many hours day after day. It is important for him to work efficiently, gently and precisely. Air tools support him in this.

You too can benefit from these advantages of working with compressed air: With a little practice, working with compressed air tools is quicker than working on stone purely by hand. You save energy, which can be important if you spend a lot of time on the stone.

With the  air hammer and compressed-air chisels you can work very precisely and in a controlled manner. The impact can be well dosed in both speed and strength, but is usually more even than the impact by hand.

In addition, pneumatic tools usually have a less direct impact, i.e. the chisel penetrates less deeply into the stone. This protects its structure, which brings great advantages when polishing marble , for example. You can also work with sharper chisels and set them flatter.

So working with air tools offers many advantages and you can connect different tools for different applications to the compressor.

Two types: Pneumatic hammers from Italy and Germany

bildhau offers two different types of pneumatic hammers : Italian pneumatic hammers from CUTURI in straight form and pneumatic hammers from BAVARIA and from Frölich & Klüpfel in pistol form.

The CUTURI pneumatic hammers from Italy, with their more direct and precise impact, are quite traditionally aimed at working marble and other crystalline stone types. With their straight shape, they are very agile in the hand when frequent changes of direction are necessary. Concave shapes can also be shaped particularly well. The CUTURI pneumatic hammers are designed for continuous operation.

The pneumatic hammers from Frölich & Klüpfel as well as from BAVARIA in pistol form are very practical if you want to work frontally. They have a less direct blow, comparable to working with a wooden carver's hammer , and are thus very suitable for working on sandstone, for example. The impact force regulation can be adjusted continuously.

Pneumatic hammers differ not only in their shape, but also in other characteristics such as impact speed, piston stroke and piston diameter. The impact speed indicates the number of blows per minute. The piston stroke indicates how hard the pneumatic hammer strikes. The piston diameter corresponds to the weight of the hammer (similar to the weight of the mason's hammer when striking by hand). For fine work, for example, you need a pneumatic hammer with a rather short piston stroke, small piston diameter and fast impact. For coarse work, a hammer with a rather slow blow, large stroke and larger piston diameter is recommended.

The drive: compressors

Air tools are powered by compressed air produced by a compressor. Different air tools require different output capacities of the compressor depending on the impact strength. When choosing a suitable compressor, please make sure that the tool and the compressor match in their requirements.
