Polyurethane: resin, foam & rubber for casting, coating, laminating, moulding, forming, filling & supporting

Polyurethane is a versatile material: large and stable objects can be moulded very quickly from casting resin. PU foam is available in soft and hard, it is very light and is therefore well suited for fillings and for building light substructures, e.g. for heavy plaster moulds. Of course, PU foam can also be used for direct moulding. (Flexible) casting moulds can be made from polyurethane rubber, which are particularly suitable for casting plaster and concrete, for example. As high temperatures can occur when the PUR rubber hardens, the material is also particularly suitable for moulding plaster, concrete and other temperature-insensitive master models.

Polyurethane casting resins

Polyurethane casting resins have the advantage (which can also be a disadvantage) that they can and must be cast very quickly. The pot life is only a few minutes, the demoulding time can be up to an hour, depending on the casting resin. As the material hardens so quickly, any work with the rapid casting resin should be well prepared and all tools and containers should be to hand.

Polyurethane has several advantages: It is easy to mix and process, even with fillers and pigments. Polyurethane has little shrinkageg when curing and has high heat resistance after curing. It can be used for thin-walled, small-part and yet stable work. One disadvantage is that the material reacts slightly with moisture before curing, which can lead to undesirable foaming. If polyurethane is used as a casting compound, it is essential to use a appropriate release agent!
