You can choose between steel rasps, carbide rasps and diamond rasps, handmade or machine-made rasps, rasps for rough work to rasps and files for fine detail work. You can read about the respective properties of the rasps and files here:

Rasps for stone sculpture made of steel

Of high quality are the hand-hewn steel rasps from the small traditional forge of Renzo MILANI in the Apuan Alps near Pietrasanta and Carrara, traditional places of marble quarrying and –working. MILANI rasps are particularly suitable for working with marble, but also for all other soft stones. MILANI rasps are forged from extremely pure steel and optimally hardened. The notches are carefully arranged and thoroughly beaten by hand. The high number of notches, their regular arrangement, the depth of the cut, the even shaping of the steel body as well as the hardness of the steel justify the high quality of the rasps.

You will find machine-made quality steel rasps at bildhau from the Italian manufacturer CORRADI.

If you want to preserve your forged rasps, please avoid using them with rocks containing quartz, such as sandstone. Some serpentine and some soapstones may also contain quartz. Since quartz is harder than metal, the rasp surfaces are abraded and become dull very quickly. It is better to use carbide or diamond rasps for stones containing quartz.

Carbide rasps

Carbide rasps have a base body covered with carbide particles of different grit sizes. Compared to forged rasps, carbide rasps remain sharp about 7 to 10 times longer. Usually carbide rasps are mainly offered in simple block form, which you can of course also find at bildhau.

However, sculpture requires rasps in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, with semi-circular, round and curved bodies. Under our own label KAPRA we make these basic shapes ourselves and then have them coated with carbide in three different grit sizes: fine, medium and coarse. Due to the relatively small quantities of these custom-made products, the higher price compared to industrially manufactured goods is explained – but you can be sure to hold a very special product in your hands!

Carbide rasps are suitable for alabaster as well as soft and hard soapstone, serpentine, marble and limestone.

Diamond-covered rasps

With diamond-coated rasps you can also work hard stone such as granite: Diamond-coated rasps are suitable for stones up to a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale and remain sharp around 15 times longer than forged rasps. For our bildhau range, we have chosen diamond rasps from MILANI: The basic rasp body is carefully forged out by hand in the proven MILANI quality and galvanically coated with diamond particles.
