Smoothing wood by hand

Smooth and even surfaces, such as boards, are very easy to smooth with the planer. Most types of wood develop a silky sheen. If you have curved shapes, you can use a draw shave. Draw shaves come in different shapes, so you can easily find the right profile for your woodwork. A draw shave works like a kind of freely guided plane. You can also use a draw shave, for example, to remove the typical 'edges' that occur when you have first worked with a carving tool. As with working with a plane, you will usually get a beautiful, shiny surface straight away when working with the draw shave, without having to resort to an abrasive.

Sanding wood by hand

Of course, you can also sand wood. This is recommended, for example, if you have previously sanded your workpiece with a rasp or file. You can use normal wood sandpaper for sanding by hand or also Velcro sanding systems, e.g. from ABRANET. The advantage of ABRANET hook and loop sanding systems, especially for soft wood, is that you can work with them with little dust and the grinding wheels do not clog up with sanding dust so quickly. The use of hand sanding blocks for different types of grinding wheels is also very practical: The abrasive does not slip away, you have a comfortable grip and can therefore work in a relaxed manner without your fingers tiring quickly. Depending on the type of wood, you can achieve a very fine sanding result with a 240 to 400 grit.
