Epoxy resin is a two-component system that can be used not only for casting objects but also as a surface resin for coating fabrics, photos or paintings, for example, as well as a laminating resin for glass and carbon fibre. Transparent casting resin is very suitable for casting and embedding objects, but also for casting smaller moulds and decorative parts.
In comparison to other casting resins, epoxy casting resin has lower to minimal shrinkage and better mechanical properties such as impact resistance. Epoxy resin can also be used to produce large laminate components with high static and dynamic strength. It also has a lower odour than polyester resin, for example.
As with silicone and many casting resins, it is also important with epoxy casting resin to avoid the formation of air bubbles in the material in order to achieve optimum casting results. Therefore, when mixing the casting resin, ensure that as few bubbles as possible are formed by stirring carefully. If you are working with a stirrer on the drill or another stirring device, the stirring speed should be as low as possible.
With very liquid casting resin (low viscosity), bubbles can often escape after casting due to the longer pot life. For casting resins with a higher viscosity, it is advisable to deaerate the compound in a vacuum before casting. If you do not have a suitable device available, you can pour the epoxy casting compound slowly from a certain height into the casting mould, e.g. over a wooden stirring spatula. This will remove at least some of the air bubbles. Larger air bubbles that stubbornly remain in the material can be pierced with a needle.
If you want to produce larger objects from epoxy casting resin, we recommend that you cast in layers and always follow the manufacturer's instructions regarding the maximum layer thickness that should be cast. If you pour thicker layers, the exothermic reaction can result in excessively high temperatures, which can cause the casting resin to yellow or crack.
Once you have poured a layer, wait until the material has cooled down, then you can add the next layer.
If you want to embed objects in epoxy casting resin, first cast a base. Allow this base to cool so that it is firm enough for you to place the object on it without it sinking in. You can then add more epoxy casting resin, in several layers if necessary, until the object is fully moulded in.
Transparent, crystal-clear epoxy casting resin can be coloured with appropriate pigments or colours, both transparent and opaque (non-transparent).
Pay attention to your health! Only work in well-ventilated areas. Wear protective clothing such as nitrile gloves , a closed safety goggles and a suitable respirator mask .
