Mallets and hammers are available from bildhau in a wide variety of materials and in different weight classes. In addition to hammer-shaped hammers made of iron and steel, you will find classic hammers made of beech wood and plastic as well as hammers made of iron, steel, brass and bronze for fine and detailed work.

Hammer made of iron or steel

With an iron or steel hammer, which was often called a mallet in the past, you strike a very direct blow that is transferred powerfully to the chisel and thus to the stone. Mallet chisels are therefore ideally suited for working on stones with a crystalline structure or a firm bond, such as marble, but also harder limestone.

For choosing between iron hammers and steel hammers, the following rule of thumb can be made: For coarse removal, e.g. working with chisels or point irons, but also carbide bruisers, an impact tool made of steel is suitable, because it gives you the most direct impact. For detailed work and working on marble, an iron hammer is more suitable.

The blow with an iron fistula is somewhat more damped and therefore well suited for smoothing surfaces with toothed, flat or scribbled irons. It is also very good for working marble with the pointing iron. For more delicate work, the iron hammer is also the first choice or, alternatively, a striking tool made of a softer material such as bronze or brass.

Mallets made of wood & plastic

If you are working with soft stones such as alabaster or soapstone or rocks with a soft bond such as sandstone or limestone, it may be gentler to use a wooden or plastic mallet as a striking tool.

To preserve your wooden or plastic mallet as long as possible when working, it makes sense to use chisels with a wider head, a so-called mallet head. This prevents the metal of the chisel from pressing too much into the wood or plastic of your mallet when hitting it, thus damaging it permanently.

Metal mallet

Metal mallet made of bronze, brass, steel or iron with a small head are particularly suitable for carrying out fine and filigree work in a wide variety of stone types, because the impact can be very precisely dosed. Due to their small size and short handle, these mallet tools are very manoeuvrable and easy to guide and can also be used in narrower cavities.

What should be the weight of my striking tool?

The weight of the striking tool, i.e. your mitten or mallet, should be in as suitable a proportion as possible to the diameter of your chisels. In this way, you preserve your muscle strength and make the best use of the percussion tool's power. The following overview can serve as a rough guide:
