Air chisels with different shaft thicknesses for every application

Italian pneumatic chisels have a shaft thickness of 7.5 mm or 12.5 mm, BAVARIA chisels usually 10.2 mm. Accordingly, the pneumatic hammers of the Italian brand CUTURI, for example, have insertion ends for 7.5 mm and 12.5 mm chisels. The English manufacturers BAVARIA and FRÖLICH & KLÜPFEL offer pneumatic hammers with insertion ends for 10.2 mm and 12.5 mm pneumatic chisels. Therefore, when buying, make absolutely sure that pneumatic hammer and pneumatic chisel fit together!

If you want to use larger air chisels for heavy material removal, we recommend a shaft thickness of at least 12.5 mm. Chisels with thinner shafts can break when working with high force.

Chisel made of forged steel or carbide?

As with hand tools, there are also chisels made of forged steel and tungsten carbide in the range of pneumatic tools for stone carving. Basic info on forged steel and carbide chisels can be found here .

Which pneumatic chisel for which application and for which stone?

For the different types of work there are, as with the hand tools , point chisels, bouncers, clawing chisels and flat chisels or lettering chisels, moreover tools such as bush hammering chisels with which you can create surfaces and shape surfaces. We recommend that you only work harder crystalline stones with pneumatic point chisels and that you use point chisels carefully so as not to damage the stone structure. Depending on the type of stone, blunter bouncers or claw chisels are better suited for a large amount of material removal. Flat irons can also be used for material removal instead of point chisels, mainly by using the corners of the flat irons.

As a rule, the Italian air tools we carry at bildhau are very pointed and sharp. This makes them very suitable for working marble and other crystalline rocks. The pneumatic chisels, e.g. from BAVARIA, on the other hand, tend to be blunt and are therefore particularly practical for working hard stone such as granite. The air chisels from GUILLET have an exposed carbide plate, which makes it very easy to create shapes with corners, curves and many details. Bush hammering chisels are always used at right angles to the surface to be worked. If you want to work on marble with the bush hammering chisel, we recommend a pneumatic hammer with a very direct blow, e.g. from CUTURI.

Vibration damping

The vibrations of pneumatic tools are transmitted to your hands and arms, which you notice especially when you work a lot and for a long time with pneumatic chisels. To dampen these stresses, BAVARIA and FRÖLICH & KLÜPFEL have developed pneumatic hammers and pneumatic chisels with vibration damping. The systems are different, so the damping can be integrated into the hammer handle, but there are also chisels with vibration damping cover.

Sharpening tools

Pneumatic tools, especially forged steel chisels, need regular sharpening just like hand tools. For this purpose, bench stones are suitable for sharpening by hand as well as diamond sharpening blocks , which you can find at bildhau in various formats.
