Milling with ARBORTECH tools

The routing tools of the Australian wood specialist ARBORTECH have already proven their skills many times: The power tools from ARBORTECH are particularly helpful for the free shaping of large wood sculptures as well as detailed work. In order to be able to use the full power of the milling discs in particular, in our experience it makes sense to work in the upper to maximum specified speed range. Please make sure that your angle grinder has an appropriate speed range!

With the milling discs WOODCARVER and TURBO Plane from ARBORTECH you have a powerful chip removal for larger format work. For smaller jobs there is the TURBO Plane mini. With TURBO Shaft and BALL GOUGE you can easily work smaller cavities out of the wood. For fine sanding, ARBORTECH offers the Contour Excenter Sander, which adapts very well even to highly curved shapes.

Power carving milling attachments from MANPA TOOLS

MANPA TOOLS come from South Korea and are high-quality power carving tools: as attachments for the angle grinder, they offer a powerfulalternative to power carving chainsaws.

For the Multi Cutter and Belt Cutter attachments, you will find bildhau milling discs with round and with triangular cutting edges for effective material removalg and fast shaping. The hole cutters, which can be used directly on the angle grinder, are multi-talented and are suitable for both coarse material removal and fine contours and recesses. Sanding mandrels and extensions enable milling and grinding in recesses. The detail cutters are the matching milling tools for e.g. PROXXON grinders, flexible shafts and FOREDOM milling machines.

SABURRTOOTH rasp milling cutters

With the SABURRTOOTH rasp cutters you can work exceptionally accurately, the tool attachments are very easy to guide. Depending on the format and grit size, you will have a strong to fine material removal. SABURRTOOTH rasp cutters can be used for all types of wood: For soft wood, the extra coarse (orange), coarse (green) and medium coarse (red) rasp milling attachments are particularly suitable, for hard wood the coarse (green) and fine (yellow). For soft wood, the fine rasp cutters are not so well suited, as the cutters can clog too quickly due to the long wood fibres.

With the SABURRTOOTH rasp cutters you can also work in the lower (from 4,000 rpm) and medium speed range up to a maximum of 11,000 rpm. Please pay attention to the exact information on the speed range for the respective rasp cutters.

Sanding wood

There are also different systems for sanding wood: For us, sanding with ABRANET hook-and-loop sanding discs and corresponding mounting plates has proved very successful for woodworking. Of course, at bildhau you will also find classic sandpaper for the angle grinder. For particularly detailed work, you can also use sanding systems for flexible shafts or straight sanders. Large surfaces can be worked on very well with the MIRKA random orbital sanders.

When working with the angle grinder, please remember with small diameter abrasives that the dead weight of the angle grinder can be too high – if there is too much pressure, there can also be too much heat. This can burn the wood and discolour it unattractively. At the same time, the loops of the hook and loop plate can melt, which means that the hook and loop discs no longer have a hold. It is therefore advisable to always lift the angle grinder slightly when sanding.

Grinding is always done in the lower speed range of about 4,500 rpm to avoid generating too much heat and thus prevent burns. Large discs require a lower speed than smaller discs. In general, the discs should not travel more than 45 m/s under any circumstances. You can do a simple conversion yourself using the following formula:

Ø [in mm] x speed [rpm] : 20,000 = speed [m/s]

A disc of Ø 125 mm has a cutting speed of 125 mm x 6000 rpm : 20,000 = 37.5 m/s.
