Choosing the right modelling trestle

When choosing a modelling trestle, there are several factors to consider: Does the modelling trestle have good stability? Is it the right height or can I adjust the height well? Should the height be continuously adjustable, even while I am working? How large should the work surface be for my project? Should it be able to rotate? What is the load-bearing capacity and stability? And should the modelling stand be easy to move, e.g. have castors?

Knurling discs and modelling stands

A rotating disc, called a knurling disc, is helpful if you want to work on a fixed table or on a modelling stand whose work surface cannot be rotated. When you model on a knurling wheel, you can easily shape your workpiece from all sides without having to constantly move your sculpture itself – this way you can save yourself from easily developing damage and deformation to your work.

In the range of bildhau you will find knurling wheels for different requirements: e.g. a simple modelling wheel made of veneered MDF for lighter sculptures and almost all requirements; a light knurling wheel made of aluminium, which does not rust and whose turning mechanism runs very smoothly, also for heavier sculptures; a knurling wheel made of cast iron or steel, which is heavier and more stable, the turning mechanism is ball bearing mounted – both result in the turning impulse remaining effective for longer. This disc is also particularly suitable for ceramists.

Knurling wheels are slowly rotating wheels and are usually operated by hand. They are mainly used for build-up techniques. Electrically or mechanically operated potter's wheels are fast-turning wheels that are mainly used for making vessels – here, the technique of raising is particularly used.

If you want to model a portrait, we also recommend a modelling stand that already has an appropriate angle of inclination. You can use modelling stands fixed on the table as well as on a knurling wheel or a modelling stand.
