How does the sculpture get onto the plinth – plinth aids

Depending on the shape, it may be sufficient to simply place a sculpture on a plinth without any fixing. However, if your sculpture only has a very small footprint or a high centre of gravity so that it does not stand securely on the plinth on its own, you will need a fixation. Setting up a stone sculpture on a stone plinth with a metal rod as a plinth aid

To attach a stone sculpture to a stone plinth, you will need a metal rod (diameter should match the size and weight of the stone sculpture, not a threaded rod!), a drilling machine (preferably with drilling machine stand for exact vertical drill holes in the base) and a stone drill bits .

And this is how you proceed:

1. first drill a hole in the base of the stone sculpture in the direction of the largest mass – i.e. not necessarily vertically, but even at an angle so that there is as much material as possible around the hole, that the hole is not necessarily drilled vertically, but even at an angle, so that there is as much material as possible around the hole.

2. to mark where the sculpture should stand on the plinth, hold the sculpture at the desired position over the plinth. Tapping lightly causes some stone dust to fall out of the drill hole, which now serves as a marker.

3. drill the base very lightly (preferably using a drill with a drill stand!)

4. Drill the hole about 2 mm deep with a little water. The water dissipates the resulting heat and prevents the stone from cracking.

5. then wipe the water off the base and continue drilling dry. Bring the drill bit up from time to time to remove the stone dust from the drill hole. Only drill deep enough so that at least 5 mm of stone remains between the drill hole and the base.

6. saw a smooth metal rod (not a threaded rod!) to the appropriate length with a hacksaw (depth of the hole in the sculpture + depth of the hole in the base). Deburr the ends with a file or sandpaper.

7. carefully place the sculpture with the rod on the base. As a rule, it is slightly inclined – this inclination must be levelled out by bending the metal rod and. 

8. remove the metal rod from the base and sculpture once again, e.g. clamp it in a vice and bend it slightly, e.g. with a hammer, to compensate for the inclination of the sculpture later. Then check that the sculpture is standing upright.

9. when the metal rod has the correct inclination, insert the rod into the sculpture with super glue.

10. the sculpture should always be removed from the base during transport. Therefore, the rod in the base is not glued.
