Most stone sculpting tools can be sharpened very well by hand. You can also machine chisels made of carbide if you have a grindstone suitable for carbide on your sanding machine. Care should be taken with forged tools : Forged steel tools can become hot when ground with a machine and thus lose their special hardening properties. 

Which cut is ideal for which chisel depends not only on its shape and material, but also on the type of rock you want to work!

Sharpening of forged steel sculpting tools

For hand-sharpening forged steel tools bildhau offers two systems: the bench stone and the diamond sharpening block. As the bench stone is quite heavy, it is mainly used in one's own studio or workshop. Diamond sharpening blocks are available in different sizes up to the size of a trouser pocket. They are therefore also ideal if you are on the road a lot.

If you want to sharpen chisels made of forged steel by machine, make sure that the metal does not get too hot. Practical for this are, for example, diamond view discs for the angle grinder or the drill – you not only see exactly how you are grinding. The holes in the grinding wheel also create a cooling effect.

Sharpening of hard metal sculpting tools

With a sanding machine with a corresponding grindstone, you can sharpen carbide chisels in no time at all. You can also get your carbide tools back into shape almost as quickly without a machine using a diamond sharpening block: It is uncomplicated and can be used anywhere and is suitable for both dry and wet grinding.
