Talcum powder for thixotropising synthetic resins, as a release agent for latex, polyaddition silicone & in bronze sand casting, as a flow agent in metal casting.
Talc is a mineral, a magnesium silicate hydrate, the main component of soapstone and is known as talcum powder when finely ground. Talcum powder can be used in a variety of ways in sculpture:
Thixotropic agent: talcum powder is a filler for thickening polyester resins, epoxy resins and polyurethanes so that these materials can also be applied vertically with a spatula, for example. Add as much talcum powder to the synthetic resin and mix carefully until the desired consistency is achieved.
Release agent for latex: To prevent latex moulds from "sticking", powder immediately with talcum powder.
Release agent for silicone: Talcum powder can be used as a release agent between moulded parts when moulding an object with polyaddition-curing silicones. Dusting a hardened silicone mould with talcum powder from the outside also prevents it from slipping.
Release agent and flow agent for bronze and metal casting: If the moulding sand mould is dusted before casting in the sand casting process, the moulding sand does not bond with the bronze, resulting in a smoother casting skin. This generally applies to metal casting: the liquid metal can flow better into the mould and fewer air bubbles form on the surface.
